Arguably, the best movie of the year so far is Toy Story 3. It’s a light-hearted family comedy with an ending that will have you in tears. In other words, it’s typical Pixar. So, if you’re looking for the alternative then Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole is the animated movie for you.

It’s the tale of an owl named Soren (Jim Sturgess) who’s kidnapped by an evil army of owls named the Pure Ones and forced into slavery. Once he manages to escape he travels to the Great Ga’Hoole Tree to inform the Guardians of what’s going on.

The film is jam-packed with action, adventure, top-notch 3D, and amazing visuals from director Zack Synder (300, Watchmen). However, it also has many flaws. The script is very generic and the owls are difficult to tell apart sometimes. This is Warner Bros’ follow-up to 2006’s Academy Award-Winning Happy Feet and it definitely doesn’t live up to it. So, in that sense, it’s a failure. On the other hand, it’s a very good family film that’s different from the norm in animation. Sure, there’s The Incredibles and even How to Train Your Dragon which feature a lot of action, but this film is epic and very serious. The kids will love it - especially the boys.
