Robbie Williams' on-air radio proposal to his American girlfriend Ayda Field on Australia's Kyle And Jackie O Show was confirmed to have been a joke by his spokesman.

On Sydney's 2Day FM he said: ''Will you marry me? I love you so much, would you mind being my betrothed until the end of time?''

Field replied: ''I would love to be your betrothed until the end of time.''

Williams, jokingly, popped the question following some dead-air time, which Field noted was 'awkward', and maintained that the proposal was genuine for the remainder of the show, even accepting congratulations from fans calling in.

In a statement, Williams' spokesperson said, ''He did say it, but he did it in a jocular manner. They are not engaged.''
