Robert Downey Jr. Earns Oscar Nod For His Role In Tropic Thunder
Robert Downey Jr. received a surprising nomination yesterday for his role in the comedy Tropic Thunder. He is up against Josh Brolin for his performance in Milk, Philip Seymour Hoffman for his role in Doubt, Heath Ledger for his role in The Dark Knight, and Michael Shannon for his role in Revolutionary Road for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
Early speculation has Heath Ledger written in as the winner for his chilling role of the Joker from the highest grossing film of the past year, but I would like to start the ball rolling in Robert Downey Jr.'s favor. Both characters played, Ledger's Joker and Downey Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus, have some similar elements to them. Both wear heavy makeup throughout the films, both characters took several months of preparation by the actors to be prepared. Both also produced some of the most memorable quotes from the past year in film.
Joker - "Why so serious?"
Lazarus - "I know what dude I am. I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!"
This debate is far from over and I know it won't end until the night of the ceremony. I just wanted to toss Downey's name into the discussion and see if my comments cause as much of an uproar as his comments did while talking to Ben Stiller's character Tugg Speedman.
"Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed"
