With the Vancouver Election in its final days, every issues matters.  This weekend Gregor Robertson was in the West End talking about renter's rights.

Vision Vancouver's Gregor Robertson took a stand on renters' rights in the city's West End.

He paid a visit to the Seafield Apartments Sunday to support tenants who say they're being evicted so the landlord can make minor renovations and raise the rent. Robertson says he'd put a stop to that.

Why should building owners be forced to rent to people at below-market rents?  I am all for fairness but that sounds pretty unfair to the building owners.  If we need to increase the housing stock to keep rental supplies healthy and rents reasonable, punishing rental building owners is not going to achieve these goals.  Creating disincentives to investing in rental apartments will cause a decrease in the supply of those units which will drive rents up in the end anyway.  This just shows that Robertson does not understand simple economics and would not be suitable as a mayor.  If he wants to build "subsidized housing" then that is a whole different story but do not force private land owners to provide those subsidies.
