The annual New Year's day Rose Parade began amidst the California sun and hordes of spectators.
Three military fighter jets streaked over cheering spectators Tuesday to kick off the New Year's Day procession of Rose Parade floats.
The 119th edition of the Tournament of Roses began as sunshine bathed the 5 1/2-mile parade route. The dozens of floats were expected to take about two hours to glide along Pasadena's main street. This year's theme was "Passport to the World's Celebrations."

I live in Sierra Madre, a small city just east of Pasadena in the Foothills. Every year, the community builds a float for the Rose Parade. It is done entirely by volunteers and each year, we walk over to where they are building the float to watch before it heads down the street and towards the parade the next morning.

I managed to get myself to Buena Vista Pavilion in Duarte to see the Rose Parade floats being built there for the last time. I believe that Fiesta Floats didn't renew their lease and will be building future Rose Parade floats elsewhere.

this is the first of many floats that day. We had great seats right at the front of the Parade. It was our first time and we were so excited to be there and see all the gorgeous floats. The people were in such a great mood, everyone was so happy on that New Years morning 2008. See more photo's of the Rose Bowl Parade @ mmtzjr69out@flickr.com
