RUN-DMC, Salt-n-Pepa, Eric B. & Rakim Honored During NBHHCM 2K11
June 14, 2011- Hip-hop royalty and pioneers RUN-DMC, Salt-n-Pepa, and Eric B & Rakim are being honored and saluted by the NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) Foundation for their 25th Anniversary milestones.
RUN-DMC in 1986 released their third album 'Raising Hell' and the first single from that album was a track titled "My Adidas." The iconic rap group made the Adidas shell-toe sneaker part of their trademark to go along with black leather jeans and jackets. The group also incorporated gold-rope chains and black fedora hats into their image.
The sneaker craze took center stage in hip-hop culture fashion with Michael Jordan and his signature "Air Jordan" sneakers. RUN-DMC helped popularize sneakers during the Fresh Fest Tour of 1984. The teen-age kids and young adults that attended the 27-city concert tour made sneakers, leather jackets, and designer jeans part of urban fashion that was on display during the events.
Derrick Rose the superstar guard of the Chicago Bulls, and the reigning 2011 NBA MVP has been given the nickname moniker RUN-DRC (D-Rose of Chicago). Rose shares the same birthday (October 4th) as hip-hop godfather Russell Simmons. Russell is the older brother of RUN-DMC founding group member Joseph "RUN" Simmons.
Salt-n-Pepa made their debut in 1986 with the album 'Hot, Cool & Vicious'. They were the first female rap act to go both gold and platinum in album sales (1.3 million). Hot, Cool, & Vicious featured the popular song "Tramp." In the music video Cheryl "Salt" James (Houston Rockets) and Sandra"Pepa" Denton (Boston Celtics) wore NBA apparel and sneakers in the video further connecting hoops and hip-hop with females in the culture.
Eric B. & Rakim the pioneering duo made their debut in 1986 with the hit single "Eric B. is President." The song was later added to their debut album in 1987 'Paid In Full.' The headline title for 1987 of the "Dunkadelic-Era" is Showtime Gets Paid In Full and the Doctor Makes his Last House-Call. In hip-hop the term "gettin' paid" means to get large sums of money. NBA players when they sign multi-million dollar contracts hear "he's gettin' paid with a phat contract."
Rakim is considered one of the 5 best MC's of all-time. His legacy continues to grow when young hip-hop music listeners today hear his flow and rhyming style. He is a true pioneer and lyrical genius.
NBHHCM Foundation founder, Derrick E. Vaughan says, "I can't put into words what RUN-DMC, Salt-n-Pepa, Eric B. & Rakim have done for the fusion of hoops and hip-hop culture. They are true pioneers and hip-hop icons that will forever be remembered as major contributors to the "Dunkadelic-Era." They will be honored and given the proper respect due for their milestones and legacies in the creation and observance of NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month."
