Kristen Stewart (Twilight) turns away from vampires to be a rocker!  She's been signed to portray Joan Jett in "The Runaways," the rock n roll biopic of the influenetial '70s all-girl rock band.   The Runaways were the first commercially successful all-girl hard rock band; their members were; guitarists Jett and Lita Ford, drummer Sandy West, bassist Jackie Fox and singer/keyboardist Cherie Currie.   The band was formed in 1975 by music impresario Kim Fowley, who thought a novelty act of teenage girls performing in leather & lace would be an easy sell. But the members were serious about their craft and performed their own music so found a rock audience with songs like "Cherry Bomb." The band was together about four years, then disolved over management and finances.   The film will focus on Jett and Currie and follow them from the band's meteoric rise as teenagers to breakup.

Noted video director Floria Sigismondi wrote the screenplay for the film and is directing with Ms Jett serving as an executive producer. The filmmakers are planning a 2009 start and will work around Ms Stewart's commitments to the two "Twilight" sequels. No word on distribuition or release date.
