Irina and Irina want to get married like any other couple. The problem is that the Moscow courts will not issue a marriage license to them.  The couple argue that there is no law denying them this right. The fight continues in court. Meanwhile, they plan to marry in Toronto, Canada in October, where it is legal. Video here.

Shipitko and Fedotova-Fet will fly in October to Toronto, Canada, where they plan to marry. They have said they would subsequently urge Russian authorities to recognize the marriage.

In 1933 in Russia, male homosexuality became a crime, punishable by hard labour and was not legalized until 1993.

Homosexuality was no longer considered a mental illness by 1999.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in Russia in 1993 and was removed from the official list of mental illnesses in 1999.

In 2005, Gay Russia was formed, along with the Gay Parade, despite the ban in Moscow. The mayor called the parade satanic. Police did not protected the gay rights activists until 2008, when police arrested violent opposers.

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia is celebrated every May 17 around the world. This is the day the World Health Organization deleted homosexuality from its list of psychological diseases, only a mere 19 years agao.

In Petersburg this year, a "flash balloon mob"  brought out the "most large-scale action in the whole history of Russia dedicated to the problem of LGBT rights".

Russian Police Break Up Gay Pride Rally

In May 2005, LGBT Human Rights Project Gayrussia.ru was founded by Nikolai Alekseev to fight discriminations on the basis of sexual orientation and raise awareness of LGBT issues in Russia. In July 2005, Nikolai Alekseev launched the Moscow Pride initiative which has been organized every year since May 2006.

Gay rights demonstrations are not permitted by Moscow, whose mayor has called homosexuality "satanic." Foreign politicians and pop stars as well as dozens of Russians have been roughed up by police and attacked for participating in the protests.

Moscow Gay Pride organisers have filed a complaint against Dmitry Medvedev at the European Court of Human Rights.

They accuse the President of inaction following their request to stage a gay march in the Russian capital in May 2008.

...Even though homosexuality is no longer a crime in Russia, unlike the USSR, post-Soviet society seems reluctant to treat sexual minorities as equals.

Gays say they’re the victims of historic prejudice, what they call ‘homophobia’.

For years they have tried to stage a parade – similar to those held annually in other major cities around the globe. But each time – in 2006, 2007 and 2008 – the city authorities have refused to give the green light to Moscow Pride.

Guess, the cake will be frosted, much like the religious nuts.

I say good for them, but it's too bad it's not recongized in Russia for them when they get home.

I am glad they get their day. Everyone deserves such a day of bliss. I also hope they win their court battle. Best wishes!

Why would people depend on science for a logical solution, but when science itself tells them that they have the same reproductive organ, they look up for Toronto Canada?
