Salvatore "Toto" D'Aquila was a true Sicilian from the Mustache Pete-era and the first boss of the Gambino crime family.
He worked alongside the Morello's in East Harlem, till 1910, when the boss of bosses, Giuseppe "the Clutch Hand" Morello was imprisoned, D'Aquila separated from the Morello family, forming his own crime family and appointing himself the new Boss of Bosses before the Joe "The Boss" Masseria Era.
His crime family operated from East Harlem and the Bronx, rivaling the Morellos. He then expanded his crime family's power into Brooklyn with top members like Alfred Mineo, Giuseppe Traina, and Frank Scalise.
In 1920 when Joseph Morello was released from prison, D'Aquila tried to have him and his closest allies killed.
On 10/10/1928, D'Aquila was shot to death on Avenue A in Alphabet City.
