Sarah Brightman New England Venue Symphony World Tour Concert a Disappointment
I attended the Sarah Brightman concert at the MGM Grand Foxwoods on November 22nd 2008. What a disappointment. With all the hype about the light show and holographic stage sets such as the promise of " breathtaking stage productions" from her official website, I was expecting something spectacular. I had seen Sarah live in concert previously (in 2004) at the Mohegan Sun Arena for her Harem World Tour and 4 years later was anticipating a great show as well as performance for the Symphony World Tour. When I sat down in my seats and found them front and center I was more than pleased, but that was my high point.
Granted the MGM Grand Foxwoods theater is not huge neither is the Mohegan Sun Arena however my expectations were that the set up would be adjusted to work in this venue. That was not the case. There was no light or special effects of any kind to speak of.
She did have some good moments on stage (which is to be expected) but the concert started 15 minutes late and ended on time which left out more than a few songs.
The best moment of the show was the duet, from Phantom of the Opera, sung with Mario Frangoulis .
When the website says: " Start planning that unforgettable evening with Sarah Brightman, and prepare to be mesmerized!" I do not expect to have to consider the venue to determine if that includes the show I am about to see.

Thanks for this. Great review, too bad about the show! Did you take any photos?

No pictures. They would not have been spectacular in any case. I have seen pictures on Flickr from prior cities in the tour (Washington DC specifically) and they were great. Too bad that this was not the case for the Foxwoods show. I do have a picture of the tickets though.

Was the lovely Shweta Shetty at the concert with Arabian Nights...love that song!

No, Harry. Shweta Shetty from the Harem tour was not in the concert.

I was at the show as well. Well it was more of recital really! Brightman did not look as she wanted to be there and by her lackluster "short" performance it proved it. I understand that MGM Grand theater is the size of a highschool aditorium and that was probably the reason for the stark show minus the glitz but at least she could of performed for more than 45 minutes. I'm sorry but "Attesa" does not need props and special affects. She could of made an effort! All in all concert goers should of been notified that this was going to be an intimate(heartless) performance and not the ground breaking show that was promised on her website, interviews etc. The concert goer would of then decided if they wanted to travel the short distance to Boston or N.Y. to see The Real Show.
The Foxwood Show was a Fiasco and no one is taking the blame for it. My self and 3,000 other people are dissapointed and probably will think twice of seeing Ms. Brightman ever perform.

I was at that concert as well and was so looking foward to the show. It was a total waste of time. I never saw so many dissapointed faces in my life when the so called show was over. People next to me remarked "is this it?" I don't understant why the concert was less than an hour. I do understand them not being able to have the big production at MGM since as you say and noted the theater is very small, but the short set list is unexcusable. Something was wrong and the audience felt it! We should get our money back.

Catastrophe of a show if that's what you want to call it! I feel mislead and
I lost respect for her, what a sham.

Thanks sammyl and L.M. I appreciate your confirmation of my experience. It was when I read this review written on the 23rd that I decided to write my own of the true experience. I have no idea where this guy got this perception.

He/She was paid to give the stellar review, It's obvious that they did not know how this Symphony tour had been advertised for many months as this ground breaking experience.
I am now turned off to Sarah Brightman as a performer and her lack of unprofessionalism she showed that night. She put no effort what's so ever, she wanted to get out of there, she was rushing through every song and it showed and it made the audience uncomfortable. Her management not knowing the venue was small is questionable but she could of performed the whole set or mix it up a bit and the audience would of been thrilled and understanding. Or better yet warn the people ahead of time that this was not going to be "The Show". instead we were mislead and at the end everyone got paid! Sad!!

Right on! I was so disappointed with this concert -- not the venue. Sarah was boring as all get-out! No warmth,l NO COSTUMES, no lighting, not even a minimal set! not one dancer! No Fernando Lima!! Okay, I will forgive the holograms, but really Sarah! This concert was a disgrace to you and your team. 8 songs missing. Heck, I paid a full-price ticket. She could have least have been annimated and wore her costumes. Mario Frangoulis was the highlight of the show. He wore a suit but mezmerized the crowd with his presence and delivery of Phantom and Canto del terra. I could have gone to Boston to see the FULL SHOW. However, due to my excitement to see the new MGM Grand (which is marvelous) I drove three hours each way to see Ms. Brightman at Foxwoods, expecting nothing less as no announcement was made that this concert would be a stripped show. If you cannot deliver on your promises that you made on your Official Website, Sarah, don't bother coming to the MGM Grand again.

That had to be the worst Performance I had ever seen. The minute Sarah Brightman hit the stage(20 minutes) late. I new something was up and her performance was just terrible and mechanical, my group noticed and commented why is she rushing through songs, she looks as if she wants to hurry and leave. A true artist/ performer would of made the most of her/his surroundings no matter how dismal or small in this case the stage and theater were. I later found out she did not do the full production show do to the size of the stage, who knows if it's true, but yes I agree we should of been notified and warned ahead of time. We all felt she could of explained the situation to her audience and sung her heart out to her "then" 4,000 fans and not shortend her set list, the audience would of loved this. Ms. Sarah B. showed not personality and professionalism. A souless performance of less than one hour is unexcusable!! What a hudge dissapointment , I am still angry and dissapointed, I expected more from the so called (by her promoters) "Diva".

WOW! I'm glad I'm not alone. My spouse and I attended that concert at MGM Foxwoods and it was a huge disappointmen for us. I knew that we were not going to have the full production when I saw the size of the stage and all and the orchestra cramped and taking up most of the stage, this did not bother me at all. What irked me the most was the length of the show (yes it was less than one hour with a 3 costume changes why bother!) and S.B lack of enthusiam. After the too short lusterless and rushed show most of the crowd was dumfounded and mystified, I heard many people while leaving the theater commenting on the length of the show.
I can not bring my self to listen to any of S.B music and I will never contribute donation to PBS next time around. This experience has left me cold and I'm completely amazed at S.B's lack of professionalism and charm, I expected more from her since she seemd like a perfectionist. She could of made the best of the situation and tried to make her fans happy regardless the less than stellar theater.
I did complain but all I got was some lame computer generated excuse.

The lack of "The Big Show experience" that Brightman advertised did not bother me one bit. What I thought was unexusable was the abbreviated performance, a 45 minute show with 8 songs missing from the set list? Fernando Lima missing was the issue as well? Come on do you think audiences are stupid?
The audience was mislead for those reasons. My partner who attended the show with me and has never heard of S.B. apart from one Song, turned to me and said......"she's just going through the motions she does not sing with any feelings, at least she can pretend to love performing for the audience". The last straw for me was her encore where she practically rushed through the song and ran off the stage without a single word.....I mean she ran and is running! She's no Diva that's for sure, obviously she doesn not want to adored by her fans especially her fans who contribute generously to Private Broadcasting Stations.
Many remarks as we were exiting the stage were heard regarding "the lack of show"
I'll never pay a single penny if she ever decide to tour again.
I to can not listen to any of her music anymore, what a shame!

Thank you everyone for expressing your opinions!
The show was an absolute let down and Ms. Brightman should be ashamed of herself.
I doubt that she'll ever perform in Conn. again and that is fine by me and many of the attendees of MGM. Good ridence to a quack.

She lost many fans that night, how unfortunate.
We should get our money back or better yet get to experience the "real" concert at a larger nicer theater such as the Mohegan Sun.
MGM Grand as a casino and for it's entertaiment value is a real letdown.
at 06:42 on December 26th, 2008
My wife and I attended also....She is a trained classical singer. The above opinions are very similar to ours. It was a short, soulless performance, which in no way matched the billing or her PBS performances.
We will probably continue to listen to the CD's that we already own, but are very unlikely to ever purchase her music or tickets again.
at 10:43 on December 28th, 2008
Charles quote " It was a short, soulless performance, which in no way matched the billing or her PBS performances." Exactly. I could forgive almost anything for I love Sarah so much, but this disaster of a "concert" (if you want to call it that) left a bitter taste in my mouth and those of many others that I overheard exiting the theatre. It has been a month and I am still heartbroken, having been a fan and supporter of Sarah's career since 1988. I belong to her official website and believe me, many fans were extremely disappointed and felt cheated, myself included. Now that her tour in the U.S. is done, she will be going to Asia where I bet she will give them a show-stopping program. I will continue to love Sarah's music and creativity. but the Foxwoods concert was inexcusable! Certainly not up to the standards Sarah herself professes to keep.

Thank you everyone. I really wonder how anyone got paid for writing a glowing review such as the one I saw that prompted me to write this one.

Hello everyone
I didn't attend the show myself, but I am so sorry none of you seems to have enjoyed it - you guys must have reasons for that! Mind you, guys, I'm in no way trying to find an excuse for Sarah performing the way she did, but maybe SHE had reasons for that, too? Maybe she was feeling very ill or something? I mean, her touring schedule's always sooooooo tough not many people could do that, even people ages younger than her. Maybe she's just got problems in her private life or something? Maybe something really awful happened to her that night? Maybe she was just so very distraught about the size and state of the arena, 'cause she IS a perfectionist and I guess this kind of trifles can make her feel really distraught. I do understand you guys must have felt quite unhappy, especially those of you who came a long way to see the show. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is I am sorry for all of you and of course no circumstances could excuse a lame performance. Obviously she had problems that particular night. What I don't understand is why on earth did she not reschedule the performance so she could give a proper show later?! This is very unlike Sarah. Well, anyway, she's only human.
at 16:25 on December 29th, 2008
She should of never performed. Everyone who attendeded the show should get a refund or a rescheduled "real" show. We all expected a full fledge show that was advertised for the "Symphony" tour. Her management should of know that MGM Foxwoods was too small of a theater and not fit for a proper larger show and advertised the show to be intimate.
The real gripe was the short performance and as another viewer commented arias such as "attesa" do not need glitz, lights and swings to be performed, I feel that's cop out excuse from her management. No one wants to take the blame and most attendees are disappointed on how S.B. handled this fiasco. She should of handled this situation in the best possible way, after all she has been in the theater industry for 30 years and is experienced with such mishaps.

You are so right, S.B. left 4,000 fans disappointed and most think negatively of her. The lack of production couldn't be helped due to theater size, but I'm sorry the short performance was unjustified. If we only knew and were aware of the type of show this was going to be I'm sure that many of us would of also have purchased tickets for the larger "longer" producton or just skip the MGM show all together. I'll never forget this fiasco and will not forgive the lack of judgement on S.B.'s part

Hello everybody. First off, let me say that I am sorry that you didnt get the "full" Symphony Tour experience. I feel that I may shed some light on what was really going on. First off, they explained why you didnt get the lights and holograms. They simply would not fit. Second, we have now learned that the flu was going through all of Sarah's staff at the time, and had probably hit her somewhere along the time before/while/after she was on stage. That same flu ( stomach one) ran throughout my family also and anyone here knows, its not much fun when every five minutes you are either throwing up or going to the bathroom, much less having to get up on stage and sing....In which may give a explaination is to why Sarah rushed through the performance. Thirdly, Fernado Lima was not there because he had written that he had a prior commitment that night with another singer. You may check this out on his myspace or official site. Yes, they should have notified everyone about the scaled down show, however, they are human. People make mistakes all the time.I am sorry to hear that people are no longer fans. Its a very sad day when someone you look up to fails you in some way or another, but that's life. Its time to forgive and move on.

These speculations make me laugh!
And then she made a "miraculous recovery" and gave a top notch performance the very next day at Madison Square Garden.
at 10:45 on February 16th, 2009
One might add that she certainly did not act or appear ill during the meet and greet following the "performace".
It is simply a case of S.B using poor judgement and her fans and attendees suffering the cosequences without so much of an apology, a rescheduled show or a refund.
This merits the reason why there is so much resentment and justifiably so.
at 08:04 on February 17th, 2009
God. How cruel can you people get. STOP this, okay? Period.
at 08:13 on February 15th, 2009
Okay. Yep, guys, I did tell everyone Sarah must have had a VERY good reason for what happened. And - so she did!
But why the hell she never just rescheduled the performance is a true mystery. I mean - come on, people - Celine the uber-diva Dion reschedules the shows when she's sick 'cause she knows it's no good working yourself into the grave! Why didn't Sarah just do the same thing?
But anyway - honestly guys - be humane! You ALL know you still love Sarah deep down, in the very same way. Please please please stop discussing what happened - you're only turning yourselves on and it's no good. Sarah doen's deserve that. She IS a true miracle.
Though I've never attended any of Sarah shows, I'm sure I would forgive what happened.
YOU CANNOT JUST THROW YOUR LOVE AWAY.
It doesn't work. Either it's not love or it keeps on living.
