Attention all sci-fi fans: the annual PKD Award finalists have been announced.

But, if you're still new to the science-fiction game, perhaps start with something from the amazing and prolific back catalogue of the masterful writer after whom the award is named: Philip K. Dick.

Finalists have been announced for this year's Philip K. Dick Award, which recognizes distinguished science fiction published as "paperback originals" in the United States.

The award is named for the prolific SF writer whose works inspired such films as Blade Runner and Total Recall. The annual award is presented with the support of the Philip K. Dick Trust and is sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society.

The first-place winner and runners-up will be announced March 21 at Norwescon 31 in Washington.

The nominees are Grey by Jon Armstrong, Undertow by Elizabeth Bear, From the Notebooks of Dr. Brain by Minister Faust, Nova Swing by M. John Harrison, Gradisil by Adam Roberts, Ally by Karen Traviss and Astropolis: Saturn Returns by Sean Williams.

Awesometown! It's been a long time since I've been super involved in the world of sci-fi writing, but I still like hearing about it. I haven't heard of anyone here except Elizabeth Bear. Minister Faust is an awesome and hopefully a real name...and Gradasil is an interesting title now that the Gardasil vaccine is out and about (Gradasil is a character's name, according to some quick Googling).
