Martin Scorsese's mystery thriller Shutter Island stays steadily at the top for the second weekend in a row, earning an estimated $22.2 million. The film brought in $41 million opening weekend (a career best for both Scorsese and DiCaprio), bringing the gross-to-date total estimated at $75 million.

Shutter Island Cast & Summary

Other cast members of Shutter Island include Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Partricia Clarkson.

In the film, Teddy Daniels (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), is a marshal sent to investigate a recent disappearance of an insane asylum patient. Complete with Dick Tracy-inspired wardrobe and eerily recognizable medical equipment, the film stays true to the 1950s era it is set in.

In the search for a missing patient, Daniels embarks in a twisting tale of deceit, hallucinations and death. While the plot of Shutter Island may appear to be exclusively one of violence, Scorsese finds a way to wind in a heart-tugging story of family struggle and loss.

Original filming at Medfield State Hospital and other locations in Maine in addition to CGI effects make this scenery a character in itself.

Gorefest Weekend at the Boxoffice: The Crazies & Shutter Island

In second place,

$18.6 million registered by the Bruce Willis-Tracy Morgan police-buddy comedy Cop Out. In third place, with a solid $16.5 million, was the horror remake The Crazies.
This was the first weekend that R-rated films filled the top three slots since Aug. 28-30, when four gorefests reigned.
