Blade Runner - Sean Young Tribute

A couple of months ago, I finally saw Blade Runner the way it was meant to be seen -- on the big screen. I know, I know, I'm a quarter century late, but it was part of Ridley Scott's re-released 'Extended Final Final Director's Cut' edition that hit theatres in late 2007 to commemorate the film's 25th anniversary.

I have seen the film countless times before, but one of things that struck me most this time, as I sat wide-eyed in the dark theatre, was Sean Young.

It's amazing how riveting she is as the replicant Rachael: the eyes, the freshly painted ruby lips, the hair, the costume, the endless cigarettes...

That performance immortalized her as the quintessential, nearly archetypal, cyberpunk vamp. And, years later, its power is hardly diminished.

It is with this overly idealized cinema-memory in mind, that I am sad to learn that Young has entered a rehab centre to seek treatment for her ongoing battle with alcoholism.

Would that all movie stars were better able to sustain both their careers and themselves, even after   films have worked the magic of etching perfect fantasies onto these all too vividly flawed actors' real lives.

Sean Young has entered rehabilitation for alcohol abuse following a weekend outburst in which she was heckling from the audience at the Directors Guild of America awards.

The 48-year-old actress was escorted from the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency in Century City Saturday night after sparring with Julian Schnabel, who was nominated for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly."

"Actress Sean Young voluntarily admitted herself yesterday to a rehabilitation center for treatment related to alcoholism," a statement from Insignia PR said Tuesday. "It is understood that Young has struggled against the disease for many years."
