Dili (ANTARA News) - Kung fu film legend Jackie Chan invited the people of East Timor to send him their scripts for action comedy films as he wrapped up a UN goodwill visit Thursday to promote peace in the young nation.

"I already told the government people and my friends (to) please send me some scripts," Chan was quoted by AFP as telling reporters before leaving the country at the end of a two-day trip.

He said Timor would make a great backdrop to one of his action films. "All these years I see Timor is fighting, fighting," he said, adding that he wanted to use the medium to send "smart messages" about peace.

Chan demonstrated his latest moves in front of about 5,000 fans at Dili's national stadium on Wednesday.

Martial arts are extremely popular in East Timor, which has one of the youngest populations in Asia but an unemployment rate of around 50 percent.

Police and analysts say violence by some martial arts groups, which often double as street gangs, is a potential threat to stability.

East Timor, which gained formal independence in 2002, still relies on foreign troops and police for internal security. end (*)
