NP Rank:
is the SFSS using our money effectively?
There are rumors circulating about the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) having a huge financial scam. In fact, students have gone as far as to say that the SFSS has been feeding off of their backs for several years now. One of the primary concerns expressed is that information about SFSS’ financial picture is vague. Within the tuition fees, for example, $60 is collected under the guise of general student fees in which $40-$45 of this fee is collected by the SFSS. This pattern can be seen in most ways that they collect money from students, there’s one lump sum placed in front of students who blindly accept this bill thinking it is a necessary expense in order to enroll in SFU classes while not knowing how the money they are paying is actually being used. In light of a recent financial audit by Tompkins, Wozny, Miller & Co., the SFSS has been receiving over $1,600,000 in student fees alone with a total revenue of $5,000,000 yearly. However, students are claiming that the money is not being spent in a way that is benificial to themselves. "Why should I pay for someone else's beer when the parties are happening in the middle of my classes?" says a dilligent mechatronics student at SFU
