2010 Shanghai EXPO MASCOT _
We passed around the photo of Shanghai 2010 Expo's mascot "Haibao" and no one could figure out how the organizers came up with a blue toothpaste thing to be the mascot for their global coming-out party.
"Haibao is a jolly, confident and cute kid," said Shao Longtu, 62, CEO of the Jiumuchuansheng advertising company and head of the mascot design team.

"Using a human being as a mascot reflects the spirit of human-orientation, while the color blue stands for water, sea, the Earth, life, dreams, the future and technology," Shao said. ...

"The mascot is a perfect match for the emblem. It also deepens the Expo theme 'Better city, better life'," Shao said.

The contrasts between the sign and its' surroundings captured my attention. It is not so much about EXPO 2010, but more about changes. The varying sizes and colours of letters and numbers in the sign... or is it a logo... or what?? The roundabout, the old police car, old Shanghai in the background.

You're right. As I started to look at photos about the Shanghai Expo, what stood out was how the so-called "unsightly" neighbourhoods were flattened-out, cleaned-up to make way for the 'new&improved' city.

This picutre is taken from the top of the Lupu bridge, high above the Huang Pu River in Shanghai. It shows parts of the new constructions for the Expo 2010. The entire former docklands are being flattened to make way for the Expo.

Yeah the toothpaste things are weird.  Maybe they were trying to play it ultra-safe by creating something amorphous, asexual, acultural, and inhuman.  I'd almost prefer something offensive and politically incorrect.
