When is Shark Week 2011? Schedule, Promos

Shark Week 2011 begins on July 31, and runs until August 5. Brace yourselves for some serious shark action as the Discovery Channel dedicates a whole week to everyone's favorite apex predators.

This year, Shark Week, like a Zambezi shark swimming from the sea upriver, will move from TV to your mobile phone: there is a Shark Week app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (but, infuriatingly, not for Android): Shark Week Live, Ultimate Sharks apps

Shark Week Highlights

  • July 31, 10pm ET: Great White Invasion (I, for one, welcome our shark overlords)
  • August 1, 9pm ET: Rogue Sharks (the phenomenon that inspired Jaws)
  • August 2, 9pm ET: Killer Sharks (come on, what more do you want?)
  • August 3, 9pm ET: How Sharks Hunt (A fascinating process, actually)
  • August 4, 9pm ET: Shark City (getting to know Bahamas sharks with Andy Samberg)
  • August 5, 8pm ET: 10 Deadliest Sharks (a classic)

Sharks Don't Growl

We at NowPublic call upon the Discovery Channel to take Shark Week to a whole new level of excellence, and remove all growling noises from their shark videos. Sharks don't growl.

Did Peter Benchley write, "The great fish moved growlingly through the night water"? No. He wrote "The great fish moved silently through the night water, propelled by short sweeps of its crescent tail."

Shark Week has been running since 1987, so there are a few repeats each year. Fortunately, shows like Air Jaws bear up to repeat viewing.
