Beyond adding further embarrassment to Mel Gibson, his latest rant, captured on audio tape and leaked by RadarOnline (NSFW audio), will become evidence in a domestic violence investigation.

The tape released Monday is being reviewed along with interviews, and other evidence, authorities said.

"What kind of a man is that? Hitting a woman when she's holding a child in her hands?" Grigorieva is heard saying. "Breaking her teeth twice in the face! What kind of man is that?"

"Oh, you're all angry now! You know what, you … deserved it!" a man believed to be Gibson is heard responding.

While context is everything, quotes like this do not look good at all if one is staring down the barrel of domestic-violence charges. (Full transcript of Mel Gibson Rant Tape)

Mel: "I'll threaten ya, I'll put you in a f*cking rose garden, you c*nt! You understand that? Because I'm capable of it. You understand that?"

The LA County Sheriff's Office is indeed investigating, but has not yet formally charged Gibson.

"Everything is part of the investigation,'' he said.

"Anything that is connected to the case we will investigate.''

He said there was no timeframe for the inquiry into Gibson to be concluded.

"The larger the volume, the longer it will take,'' Whitmore said.

The case will be turned over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, which will decide whether to press charges.
