Should sex between consenting adults be a felony, if one is a tea

Should the government make it illegal, and a felony at that, for two consenting adults to have sex? Well, Republicans are actually pretty big on making certain acts of consenting adults, illegal. They are the strongest supporters of prostitution laws, a sizable percentage of them still support anti-gay sodomy laws, etc. Many of them favor outright banning of adult pornography. They just don't like people having sex with other people.

In Michigan there is a bill, that probably will pass, that will make it a crime for a school employee (who could be a 19 year old student teacher) who has sex with an 18 year old student. Both adults. Now, first of all, if a teacher has sex with an 18 year old student, he or she should be fired. It is an abuse of authority and position. A total conflict of interest. But, such a law would make a felony even if the teacher never had the student in his/her class. Indeed, the janitor or school cook could be charged under this poorly written bill.

When society charges someone with a crime, especially a felony, that is a big deal. Felonies costs society (and us) a lot of money to enforce. They ruin lives, depending on the alleged offense. We must ask ourselves do we ruin the life of a 22 year old teacher for having sex with an 18 year old student who might not even be in her/his class? Indeed, would this make the teacher a registered sex offender who has to move constantly based on restrictions where those offenders can live? Public policy should be smart, not dumb.

First off Republicans a hypocrites. They say government shouldn't be in the business of intruding on personal freedoms and rights. Yet that is exactly what they do.

Second, this issue of sex in America is also hypocritical. Tens of millions of teenage kids for decades have been having sex and/or sexual relations under the age of 18.

As for restricting teachers having sexual relations with any students, that has always been schools and education system policy. It's for legal reasons for any institution. Making some law to restrict any 18 yr old ( or older) student not to have sex with any teacher shouldn't even be constitutional. What if they are from different schools_not to mention both being of legal age as you point out in this article. What if the teacher is 30 and the student is 25? Idiots ! Where will this end?
