Nikki Finke from Deadline.com is reporting that Shutter Island topped the box office on Friday with an estimated $13.5 million. Finke has been over-estimating the past few weeks, so it'll likely be about $11 million. Either way it's good news for Paramount which got a lot of criticism when they decided to remove the film from its original October 2009 release date and the Oscar race. They claimed the movie would do better this month and perhaps they were right. There's no intense competition next week, so the film could go for two straight weeks at #1 and then be knocked down by Alice in Wonderland.

Last week's holiday themed champ, Valentine's Day, was in second with an estimated $5.6 million. It's slowly making its way to becoming the first 2010 release to gross $100 million domestically. Franchise hopeful, Percy Jackson, and Avatar were tied with $4 million. Although estimates by Variety later this morning will likely say it wasn't a tie. Regardless, the former cost under a $100 million to produce so it'll probably get a sequel and the latter gets closer and closer to $700 million domestically. Both films are from FOX. Meanwhile, The Wolfman hangs on with an estimated $3 million.

So far, the collaborations between director Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have all made a profit at the box office.
