Simon MacCorkindale, who is best known for his role on BBC's Casualty as Dr. Harry Harper, died on Thursday night in a London clinic according to the BBC.

He had been diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2006, but was told it was terminal when it spread to his lungs last year.

He died in the arms of his wife Susan George.

Ms George said: "No-one could have fought this disease any harder than he did since being diagnosed four years ago.

"He fought it with such strength, courage and belief. Last night, he lost this battle, and he died peacefully in my arms.

"To me, he was simply the best of everything, and I loved him with all my heart. He will live on in me forever."

Simon MacCorkindale appeared in the Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, but started his career in theatre, in London's West End.

He also appeared in Dynasty and Dukes of Hazzard before Casualty, but he left the hospital drama after being diagnosed with cancer. He went on to star in the West End production of The Sound of Music until February 2009.
