NP Rank:
Slumdog Millionaire Criticized by India's Amitabh Bachchan
It is not always easy for the West to tell an Eastern story and cultural sensitivity is a prerequisite if it is to be done properly and accurately. Film Slumdog Millionaire has received ample amounts of good press and bode well at recent award ceremonies yet prominent Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan has a bone to pick about how India is depicted in the film.
"If SM (Slumdog Millionaire) projects India as [a] Third World dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations," Mr Bachchan wrote in his blog."It's just that the SM idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a Westerner, gets creative [Golden] Globe recognition. The other would perhaps not."
Representing non-Western nations on the Hollywood big screen is not a new challenge; Western biases can be tough to shake. It is easy for stereotypes to be perpetuated and certain ideals to be upheld. In order for a film to truly "cross over", there needs to be strong attention to detail and heavy emphasis on cultural exchange.

Though Amitabh Bachan writes on a paid for blog, where he gets paid to blog.. www.bigadda.com, the point that he has raised has discussion value. Simply put he is asking whether a movie about Poor living conditions in developed world make a cut? I guess if it is well done it will...
A sign of a developed society is clearly the ability of the citizens to debate, discuss and critize their our society/ country and on that count almost all developed nations that AB is referring, will score high marks!!

I've seen some great Indian movies about poverty in India. One (forget name - Bombay 'something') about street children living at the station. I remember his 'master' tyook off his leather and whipped it so that the boy had to keep jumping to avoid. I thought it was a gorgeous film. And certainly made the British movie screens. Danny Boyle is a great British director: he hardly qualifies as Hollywood though!

It seems like a good movie. North America is not the West though. I do think that there is still a great difference in perceptions among European and North American.

I've also seen great films by Indian directors about British society. It seems tome that the skills of the director are more important than the nationality of the person.

I have seen this movie. This is an OK kind of movie , but calling this great would be too much. The storyline was good, but there are lot of gaps in it.Acting also average but excellent camera work. This is a typical good end movie with western ingredients.
I feel why this movie captured NA and EU market is because it shows them what they want to see. Nobody wants to see the bright part of India. Even now , for majority of the NA and EU people, India is a land of Elephants , snake charmers, maharajas and poverty. So movies cater to those sterotypes does succeed.
There is a scene in the movie the boy jumps into a tank of feces and comes out. This disgusting scene would have entertained the judges, I guess. One analogy I can think of is when tsunami happened and all those bloated deadbodies washed ashore after two or three days. Lot of people went for tsunami tourism taking high resolution pictures of those piles of decayed bodies and published in sites and sent in mass mails. But now I realise that the market for such ghastly imagery is much much bigger than previously thought.
gerrypopplestone, I know the movie you are refering to. It is "Salaam Mumbai. ". Yeah, I know that you would have loved that scene where the boy gets beaten up ;).
There is nothing wrong in producing such movies with the right ingredients as the ultimate aim for them is commercial success. Even me and of my friends enjoyed that movie as we are bit more westernised than an average Indian.
If you want another Indian movie that successfully markets the stereotype India, watch "Outsourced". It show casts it all . Poverty, dirt, Indian English, Chilly and hell, a holy cow inside the call center setup in a remote Indian village. You will love it ;)
IMDB link to that movie is here

"Outsourced" is a bore. I would prefer two and half hours of entertainment like "Main hoon nah" with great music and songs that bring joy. Who wants to be a virtual gutter inspector?

Well... Gutters are a reality in India. Exactly like the mission to moon or the LCA (Light weight Combat Aircraft) or like the IT industry. There is no problem accepting reality. It is not even a problem to show only gutters in a movie.
The problem comes when people are too naive to believe that whatever shown through the view filters of a movie represents the actual and entire picture. It is a dangerous problem if the deviously cunning people who are smart enough just acts dumb and start saying things like "Gawwdd,,there is only poverty and misery in India"
In the same note, neigher dances nor songs present the reality.

This is regarding the injustice given to the original music composer from the Bollywood Mr. Laxmikant Pyarelal. As Mr. A.R.Rahman received and accepted the Golden Globe Awards for the 'Best Original Music Score' at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards at Los Angeles on the 11th of January. In actual Mr. A.R. Rahman is a Cheater and a Copier.
He got inspired (lol! wot a word to hide the COPIER) by the already hit and a very Catchy Original Music Composition 'Choli ke Pecche kya hai' from Mr. Subhash Ghai's movie 'Khalnayak'. The music was original made by Late Mr. Laxmikant of Laxmikant Pyarelal's duo. They were brilliant musicians. They have rendered the Original Music Score. I have edited boths songs and I can provide the proof that the singers for Ringa Ringa were the same (Ms. Alka Yagnik & Ila Arun ji- Female Singers) and they sung the song just on the same note (pitch), same style(sensous), same tempo (music rhythm). Only the lyrics writer is different. The lyricist of the original song 'Choli ke peeche kya hai' was the Bollywood famous lyricist Mr.Anand Bakshi. The song should be Played on all the TV channels just to let the upcoming music composers to learn a lesson from the real Music Composers or the Great Guns of the earlier days or times who gave us the evergreen hit and melodious music which is still very famous in Bollywood. Looks like Mr. A.R. Rahman was too greedy for this award.
Not the 1st Indian who COPIED the compostion but also received award by a High Class and a Reputed Authority. Really Strange!
I am not ANGRY with MR. A.R. Rahman BUT feeling strange and shocked dat Y did he accepted dat award. y didn't he speak about MR. LP(laxmi-Pyre) I better bow down infront of MR.RD.BURMAN who was so great and so original as compared to todays music director who just make the background score with the help of electronic sounds.
Sorry Mr. A.R.Rahman, Mr. Shahrukh, Mr. Anil Kapoor etc. as u all must be feeling gr8 but don't forget that the BAAP of all the actors i.e. BIG B is still ALIVE and will be ALIVE in the hearts of the millions of Indians to teach copiers to ACT from heart and brain aswell ;-)
Hope you will give justice to the Original music composer as I don't want any kind of Fame or publicity. I am agreat music lover and a listener too. I do not want any fake music director who did nothing in actual in making of that compostion became the 1st Indian to receive the award for original music score.
Mr. Rahman must be INSPIRED :-D . He was shocked coz he knows THAT HE COPIED. lol!
Take Care guys if you think like me, plz do comment. &
Dont' be so emotional ki INDIA ka hai. India is the THE BEST COZ OF THE ORIGINALS.
V R Not the SLUMDOGS... V originate they FOLLOW US. Be proud of whatever you r. and just smileeeeeeeee...

hiya Ms. Kichu,
ur name is very cute. V all have 2 die someday, but better not with a shame by taking others recognition or awards or rewards etc. Smile plz!
I think U didn't read well. I had mentioned dat m not angry with Mr. A.R. Rahman but M sad as he didn't accept dat he actually copied dat particular track of Mr. Laxmi-Pyare. m proud to be Indian and a Christian too but PPL like U promote piracy in the music industry and in the film industry as well.
Even Rahman would agree on that particular track and I feel pity on Ucoz u have no guts to accept the reality ;-) May Jesus Bless You!
Still Gud Luck to Mr. A.R.Rahman for the Oscars. As he is a very good musician and I respect him too. I was a fan of him but not now.
I am a big fan of Mr. Shanker Mahadevan, Mr. Anu Malik, Bappi Da, Mr. Visahal Shekahr, Mr. Isamail Darbarr, Mr. Himesh Reshamiya who were and are giving gr8 hits in the present time. But sorry for them as they are not getting such kind of recognition.
Why didn't the child artists get the awards. They did a gr8 job and they didn't copy ne1. They were fresh but were excellent. They make our country proud. India is India---- Pure India @ Democratic India.
So Keep your eyes Open and have patience. Always remember to give honour and respect to the Original Composers, Singers or Musicians. Don't b so sick and backward in your thinking. India is Gr8 in all the fields--> Original

Does anyone know why Amitabh never made the guest appearance himself in the movie?
