The story of a down on his luck teen from the slums in Mumbai who makes it to one question away from winning the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" is up for ten Oscars including the nights top prize, Best Picture. The film has some stiff competition in that category though; Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button are up for the award as well.

Slumdog Millioniare has been a sleeper hit this year and has surprised many, including director Danny Boyle, with it's positive reception, and in turn, box office success in North America.

"We had no idea, no hope, no expectations that our film will be so well received in America," Danny Boyle told Rediff India Abroad recently. "We thought given the British interest in India and the large Indian population in the United Kingdom that its primary audiences would be there."

The film has brought in over $43 million in box office revenue and is still on several screens across the world. Today's news of the nominations should result in a rise in revenue. Based off of Oscar Buzz alone, the film was sold out last Friday here in Vancouver. Despite Notorious, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and My Bloody Valentine:3D all opening that night. Watch out Underword: Rise of the Lycans and Inkheart, Slumdog Millionaire is still in theaters and is going to bite into your opening box office numbers.
