I don't know about you, but I'm talking about the South Lake Union Trolley. Hey, whatever gets people out of the traffic jam and onto public transportation is cool with me. We have no SLUTS in Vancouver-- I'll have to cross the border for that particular experience. So be it.

Rides are free this month. Then the fare will be $1.50.

Among those at the noon-hour sendoff were people wearing T-shirts with the acronym for South Lake Union Trolley or SLUT.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels said, "I don't care what you call it as long as you ride it."

No, I'm not tired of that acronym yet.
Officially, it's now the South Lake Union Streetcar. But the trolley name already has caught on, and in the old Cascade neighborhood in South Lake Union, they're waiting for the SLUT.
SLUS sounds lame. SLUT is better.

"We're welcoming the SLUT into the neighborhood," said Jerry Johnson, 29, a part-time barista.
[...]
"There was a meeting with representatives from the city several years ago," Johnson recalled. "They asked us what we could do for you. Most people raised their hands and said 'affordable housing,' " he said. "Then the people from the city huddled together -- 'whisper, whisper, whisper,' -- and they said, 'How about a trolley?' "
It's free this month, folks, but next month the SLUT starts charging: a hefty buck fifty.

The SLUT: It's cheap (free this month) and easy. Enjoy, Seattle!

Enjoy, indeed! Thanks, Seattle, for indulging our collectively juvenile sense of humor whilst supplying your fair city with affordable mass transit.

How did the planners not notice that? SLOT, SLAT...surely they had options.

jordan, good stuff.

Every city should get a SLUT.

Everyone wanted to ride the SLUT with Mayor Nickels; it was packed! I got my passport and will try to get 10 stamps from South Lake Union businesses so I can win a trip to Vancouver, BC.

And, yes, I have a "Ride the SLUT" shirt! I even got *before* the news found out about it!

It's so satisfying to be "in" on something before the lumbering beast that is the media finds out about it. I didnt' realize that one could win a trip to Vancouver by using public transport-- what a brilliant idea.

Vancouver has no Sluts? Sucks

The South Lake Union Trolley (SLUT) in its current incarnation is pretty silly. The current track doesn't extend far enough north or south to be of any use to Seattlites...as it stands it's basically a neat toy for the city, nothing more.

Now, if they extend the track north to the UW and south to the SoDo (stadiums) it would become a very useful way to get around the city.

In the meantime, the SLUT is only good for a fun ride!

Reminds me of the CAT buses in Perth. They're electric and have the coolest-ever public transport symbol (a badass panther), but are limited in their reach.

jordan, You know I could not pass up commenting on this one.

As for no Sluts in Vancouver, I disagree, My Girlfriend refers to me and many others as Sluts, alibiet , "Food Sluts". A name I try to live up to.

I rode the SLUT (shh, don't tell my wife).  I will probably use to go from my office to Fred Hutch but I don't really see the ROI for the line as it is today. I heard from one of the engineers that the city didn't even allow the power substations to be built properly that power the line. If two trains enter the same electrical zone the power draw would be too great and they both shutdown. The zone split is at Thomas street where the line splits between Westlake Ave and Terry Ave. That's why the trains have been sitting at that station for extended periods of time.

For now it's a fun toy like the monorail...but then again, aren't most sluts?
