I believe the future for all computing is intrinsically tied to the future of mobile/wireless data access. As applications move to the cloud, ubiquitous and reliable access to the cloud is and will be essential to enabling the next major shift in computing.
Unfortunately this is the one major area frought with competing and legacy interests (particularly the legacy business of selling voice and roaming minutes) and competing policy interests and competing paradigms open platforms, open networks, open services, open applications and Net Neutrality.
In each case there are arguments why open or "closed" or "managed" is or is not optimal from a public and economic perspective and in most cases a balance is going to be required. In most cases today, a balance is not what we're getting.
700Mhz, the choice new spectrum that is coming online (freed from analogue TV) may -or may not- change everything.
