The Stack Boys: 'Snapbacks' | Ill-Advised Rap Video
"Snapbacks": The Stack Boys Rap About... Hats?
The beauty of YouTube is that anybody can make a rap video. The problem with YouTube is... anybody can make a rap video. This week's example: The Stack Boys. These kids put together a video called "Snapbacks", which is pretty much about baseball caps with the little plastic snap in the back. Oh, and swag.
If you like autotune, clothes from the mall, and the Fabolous-style "wooo!" sound, you may actually be into "Snapbacks". If you care about the future of hip-hop, though, you won't be into this at all.
The Stack Boys had some help with "Snapbacks": their dad is Ian Stacks, who has some ill-advised rap videos of his own.
Now, I won't say that this is the worst rap video ever, because it's not. The Stack Boys will probably regret that this video exists, but they're definitely not hopeless.
Remember, A. Samuels has a fortune and more life experience than everyone involved in "Snapbacks" combined, and he's responsible for "Livin De Life". Also:
The reason that there are so many earnest yet horrible rap videos out there is that rapping is a lot harder than it looks. The beauty of the form is that it's accessible to everyone, but it is not instantly so. What, you think Fat Joe just woke up one morning and said, "Hey, I'm an MC"? No- he worked at it for years.
A quick tip: if you look like you're nine years old, "I'm a grown man, you're a boy scout" is not an appropriate lyric.
Okay, one more: "Get on your knees and bow" doesn't really make any sense as a lyric. To be fair, though, we must also call out Dr. Dre on this one: in "Forgot About Dre", he says, "Better bow down on both knees", which also makes no sense. There you have it: a direct connection between The Stack Boys and Dr. Dre. They'd have you genuflect.
