This isn't your parents Star Trek. Actually...it's no one's Star Trek. J.J. Abrams and his screenwriters have found a clever way of restarting the franchise. In the movie, a Romulan known as Nero (Eric Bana) goes back in time to get revenge on Spock. He blames Spock (Zachary Quinto) for the destruction of his planet. But by going back in time he disrupts the space time continuum and creates an alternate Star Trek universe. In other words, remember Back to the Future, Part II? The same science is applied here. Overall, it's a VERY good movie. But I'm not sure if it's a great one. Abrams and his team do a good job of making a movie for the general public while at the same time pleasing the fanbase. And the actors all do a wonderful job of playing roles previously played for the last 40+ years by one person. Yet, I'm not too sure of this alternate universe stuff. It works HERE but it could go either way in the long run. This may have been a good decision or a horrible one. We'll find out in a few years.

I went to see this film last night.  I watched for a while and then the ship got hit by a blast of lightning,  I know this because it was very loud and woke me up with a jump!  Fortunately no one spotted that I'd been asleep so I watched some more and worked out that the baddies had tattoos.  Then Kirk landed on a snow covered planet and was about to be attacked by a monster.  He must have survived because when I woke up he was still in the film.  Then there was loads of crashes and bangs and special effects.  I think the baddies lost.
