Stephanie Birkitt is the woman at the center of the David Letterman extortion scandal. Stephanie Birkitt is David Letterman's former personal assistant, with whom Letterman admitted having an affair. Stephanie Birkitt went on to date Robert "Joe" Halderman, producer of CBS' 48 Hours program. When Stephanie Birkitt and Robert Halderman split up, Halderman still had Stephanie Birkitt's diary, in which she had recorded details of her affair with David Letterman. Stephanie Birkitt is not part of the extortion attempt, though- Robert "Joe" Halderman came up with that scheme all by himself, somehow thinking he was just going to walk away with a check for two million dollars.

(Note: this is a very bad idea in general if you're having an affair with someone world-famous)

Birkitt says she met Letterman accidentally when he called the office where she was working and wanted somebody to tape an episode of MTV’s “Jackass” for him. They soon “developed a phone rapport,” and Letterman and Birkitt would talk once or twice a week, mainly about her weekends. “I would tell funny stories about my weekend or what he thought were funny stories and I thought were normal.”

David Letterman's confession appeared to be quite bizarre to the live audience since they didn't know that he was serious instead of usual monologue.
