What is more fitting than an award presented to Stevie Wonder, by the first lady,  in Washington D.C. during Black History Month.

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize will be presented in the East Room of the White house at a special concert. The concert will be taped and played the next day on Feb. 26, 2009 billed as "Stevie Wonder In Performance at the White House: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize."

The White House is planning a concert this month to honor Stevie Wonder, whose music provided part of President Barack Obama's campaign soundtrack.

The White House says the president and first lady Michelle Obama will present Wonder a Library of Congress award on Feb. 25. The concert will be broadcast the next day on PBS as part of its "Performance at the White House" series.
The award-winning and chart-topping Wonder performed at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on the night Obama accepted his party's nomination. He also performed at a concert during the week of Obama's inauguration.

His song "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" became a theme song during the campaign. Obama also used "Higher Ground" during campaign stops.

The President and First Lady have made it known that Stevie Wonder's music has been a big part of their life before, during and after the inauguration.

This will be only the second presentation of this award. The first having gone to Paul Simon in 2007.

"Stevie Wonder is the epitome of what the Gershwin Prize stands for," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, who selected Stevie Wonder for the honor in September 2008. "He has crossed musical and cultural boundaries and has made contributions to humanity far beyond the realm of entertainment."

New pics added, not the greatest hi-res but better than no-res. Just some screen caps, maybe more to come ;-)

These are great pics. Not staged. Candid. Love them. Of course I do love the album cover. One of the best I have ever seen of Stevie.
