Suge Knight Sues Kanye West for $1M for Miami Shore Club Shooting
Rap mogul Suge Knight announced he is suing Kanye West and a Miami promoter for more than $1 million over a shooting at an August 2005 celebrity party in which Knight was shot in his right leg, shattering his femur.
In the lawsuit, the 44-year-old Knight claims West and the promoter didn’t provide adequate security to keep weapons out of the VIP party that took place before the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards.
West hosted the party at Miami hotspot The Shore Club and it was attended by celebs Jessica Alba, Paris Hilton, Eddie Murphy and the Black Eyed Peas.
Suge Knight-Kanye West Lawsuit Details
The trial is set to take place December 6, 2010 in a Florida courtroom. Knight, the founder of Death Row Records, is seeking damages for $200,000 in medical bills.
He wrote in the lawsuit that he lost a 15-carat, $135,000 earring in the moment of panic.
He's an icon in the music industry. He walks in a room and he lights it up,” said Marc Brumer, his attorney. “He had an expectation of security there. How someone came with a gun into a very VIP party, that just doesn't meet the smell test in life.
Despite the number of partygoers, few claim to have witnessed the 6+ gunshots and the assailant has not yet been caught.
Knight claims he and his entourage were patted down before being admitted into the party and they expected the same would be done for others.
West and the Shore Club denied claims of negligence in court papers.
Suge Knight’s Financial Troubles
In 2006, Knight filed for bankruptcy protection and was forced to sell Death Row Records and his $4.56 million Malibu mansion. If he wins the lawsuit, he will have to share the damages with a bankruptcy trustee and the IRS.
