NP Rank:
Susan Boyle's 100 Million Fans Will Be Gone By Next Week
Susan Boyle, the much-hyped Scottish singer who — in just one week — has gone not only from zero-to-hero but from has been to the 'Queen of Meme' as views of her YouTube performances on Britain's Got Talent have soared past the 100 million mark, is soon to face the inevitable fate of the microfamous — being forgotten.
With gushing Twitter praise, celebrity tears, and her newly-found global fans' enamored feeding frenzy reaching its achingly saccharine fever-pitched cry last week, Boyle is now ready to be dropped like a sack of bricks by the notoriously fickle pseudo-humans who comprise the ever-changing mundane mass of criss-crossed communications that is the world wide interwebs.
Indeed, Boyle could hardly be called a talent worth noticing beyond whatever singular viral video tears have been shed at the sight of her bloated Broadway braying of some melodramatic snippet from Les Miserables (or should that be Très Miserables?) — and whatever fanfare has been trumpeted in her honour is, let's face it, about to go silent.
Despite being nearly the most-watched set of videos in YouTube's history, and despite besting views of Barack Obama's truly moving victory speech on the eve of the U.S. elections, Boyle will gain her fleeting immortality in the harrowed halls of web-celebrity as soon as web users, bloggers, and the thousands of people-that-signed-for-Twitter-because-of-Oprah do what they have always done — move on to the next underdog, stupid pet video, melodramatic cry fest, or ridiculous 4Chan concoction. Whatever happens to catch everyone's attention first.
Susan Boyle's 15 seconds of sensationalised celebrity are almost up. It's no longer a question of if, but of when.
Predictions?
The Scots spinster's astonishing Britain's Got Talent performance has been watched more than 85million times on the internet in just over a week.
Five million more fans listened to the 10-year-old recording - exclusively revealed by the Daily Record - of Susan singing blues classic Cry Me A River. And viewers of other clips of the unlikely superstar have taken the total past 100million.
Susan's phenomenal appeal has even put the new US President in the shade. Obama's victory speech on election night in November has only attracted 18.5million online hits.
The world has gone Susan Boyle crazy since her incredible talent was unveiled in front of 10.3million ITV viewers last Saturday night.

With a voice like that she is hardly an underdog. The hype has more to do with highlighting the show,Britains got talent. Susan at present is seemingly being poached by Hollywood. Why not good luck to her.

I really enjoyed reading this opinion piece, the words that you used were well thought out. I had never heard of the word microfamous, it is now a new word that I'll use, I have added it to my vocabulary. Thanks
As regards Susan Boyle, I agree with you, there will inevitably be a new sensation even before the end of this very season of "Britain's got talent", Perhaps they'll discover a dog that manages to shit on a tiny silver foil square measuring just 3 inches and afterwards wrapping its doings with the foil and then disposing of it in an orderly fashion.

I predict Susan will become a huge success on many fronts. What's the matter with you, Trumorist? Jealous?

Susan Boyle may come and go, but her real talent and her real quality of soul have opened the door to the end of our very mediocre youth culture and those abysmal mediocrities that are on our TVs night after night with their inane and immature narcissistic selves on display as the shameless soul-less beings that they are.

As her version of "Cry Me a River" indicates, she's got a great voice for classic jazz/blues/Broadway standards. That audience doesn't care how old you are or what you look like as long as you can interpret the songs. The masses may lose interest, but the audiophiles who gravitate to classic ballads will add her to their collection.

Disagree! You spew filth from your mouth. It's no wonder we need more Susan's in the world!

ditto what jazzyzazzy said. She's up there to sing, not to look pretty. Besides, most of the people we consider "beautiful" in media are plain at best in real life. As far as I am concerned, you are as hot as your photoshop artist and plastic surgeon say you are, and she hasn't hired her staff yet.

True Goddess rising!! Woo hoo.. It's what's inside not out!
Our culture has brain washed kids to idolatrize sexuality, exterior and adoration of someone with a gift from the UNIVERSE! Children need other role models to aspire to.
Honest , hard working with values...a conscience.

What do we need grumpy destructive bloggers for. they infest the internet with their unimportant vomit. Susan Boyle is special delivery somewhat reminding me of Obamas effect on the world- promoting hope for change- for people to get off their cynical idiotic hayride - where heart can replace ugly tongues

I will never forget her performance. It brought tears to my eyes not only for its beauty, but for the reminder to not judge by appearance. The inevitable criticisms that have followed her inspirational performance were quite predictable because those who rely on external elements, such as vote-getting costumes and the dance moves, are not able to begin to compete with the pure talent of Sandra. I am tired of external pizzaz that too often replaces anything real. Sandra is real.

absolutely not! many of those fans watch her videos more than just once, and many share the videos with their families. i'm convinced we'll be hearing from this lady for a long time.

True,
What an idiot you are! You violate the terms of use and you rag on someone who has the talent to be a superstar. My guess is you're another loser just like the other idiot who hosted a show Susan sang on in the mid 90's who was totally disrepected.

Maybe everyone loves Susan Boyle so much because they can't stand Simon Colwell.
Personally, I have never been able to watch the show because Simon Colwell is so rude crude and socially unacceptable to me.
If he is an example to which we want children to emulate, then everyone should not be upset when their kids turn out to be arrogant jerks who judge people on their outward appearance.
I wish Miss Boyle all the luck.
I wish Simon Colwell would retire somewhere FAR AWAY...far away from influencing the youth who watch him and think his methods of berating people are socially correct.
To me, Simon Colwell is not someone to should be setting ANY type of example to children.
He has to be the most horrible person I have seen on TV in my entire life.
I would watch the show if he wasn't on it.

I, too, think that Susan Boyle is a good, but not a great singer. And I know that having a good voice is important in the business, but the ones who are famous, are so because they are trained to handle the very thing that Susan apparently cannot: pressure. Madonna (of whom I am definitely not a fan) must be given her props for stamina, drive, cunning, creativity, and an almost Machiavellan dominance in a hard, critical, and down-and-dirty business. Susan Boyle performed three times in two months and had to be hospitalized.
Can you imagine the stamina of the average choir singer currently on Broadway in Les Miserables, able to do 6 nights per week over a year's contract, or even better - the road company, waking up in a different city every few days, or please - let's just talk about the group that WON this competition : how different is the music business than the 4 to 5 hours practice of olympic proportions exhibited by the genius of their performance? No, no, Susan won't last unless something drastic happens.
