Susan Graham, an American opera singer, was given the distinction of singing 'Ave Maria' at Senator Ted Kennedy's funeral today at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in Boston, and her performance moved many to tears.

Watch a video of Susan Graham singing at the funeral.

Below are the lyrics for Ave Maria, although some versions do vary:

Ave Maria, gratia plena.
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave, ave dominus,
Tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
Et benedictus
Benedictus fructus ventris tui
Ventris tui, Jesus.
Ave Maria.

(Some versions add the following)

Sancta Maria,
Ora pro nobis,
Nobis peccatoribus,
Nunc et in hora
Mortis nostrae.
Ave Maria

Ave Maria is a prayer to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, asking for her help. This prayer forms the basis for the Rosary in the Roman Catholic Church, and has been set to music numerous times.

Among the most famous settings is the version by Charles Gounod (1859), adding melody and words to Johann Sebastian Bach's first prelude from the Well-Tempered Clavier.

I'm never tired of listening to Ave Maria, and Susan Graham performed it beautifully.
