Susan Sarandon: If Obama loses, I’ll be “checking out” leaving America
“I’ve got a lot of flak from feminists who feel that I should be supporting Hillary Clinton, but I thought the whole point of feminism is that you’re not supposed to be defined by gender,” she says…
Always busy, Sarandon is about to start work on the romantic period drama The Colossus, but with the presidential election campaign being heatedly contested, she also has bigger things to consider.
“If McCain gets in, it’s going to be very, very dangerous,” she says.
“It’s a critical time, but I have faith in the American people. If they prove me wrong, I’ll be checking out a move to Italy. Maybe Canada, I don’t know. We’re at an abyss.”

Hello Amy, I'm sure Susan Sarandon represents the views of many Americans - but she is fortunate in that she can afford to 'check in' to any country in the world she chooses, unlike the rest.
Is it true that 97% of Americans don't even have passports? I heard that figure came from the last census.
And, is it true that Oregon has advised it's citizens to mail in their votes rather than use electronic machines? I should think Princeton Uni's report on the ease with which they can be 'cracked' would caution all thinking Americans.

I agree Maireid, Susan does not represent all Americans, I would doubt she represents 1%, since she is over the top anyways as a wealthy celeb when compared to the rest of the country, but then on the other hand, "Susan did have sex with a Sweet Transvestite, from Trans.......ylva........nia"!

Obama is what this country needs, I'm not even American but this country has a tendency of not knowing a good thing when they see and if Obama looses in November then you might as well put him in the list of missed opportunities. But I don't really think moving to Canada or some other place is a practical resolution; who's going to fix this country if everyone who believes it needs help decides to leave everytime things don't go their way.

Holy Crap, Canada doesn't want Saradon. let her move to Burma, where I am sure she can protest all she wants, and while the Junta are hunting her down, as she is running for her friggin life, perhaps then, Miss Holier than friggin thou" will learn to appreciate Freedom in what is the Good Old USA and Canada~
Nothing like being incarcerated in a foreign country with horrific human rights abuses to make you appreciate the greatest country on the Planet, Called "North America".
Thousands of Americans and Canadians rotting away in third world countries without due process I can bet you will agree with that Assessment~ "North America, Love it, or get the Hell outta Dodge!"

Funny, Barry, to hear you speak of N. America as the place of Freedom with a capital F, when the USA represents something like 2.5% of the world's population and has 25% of the world's prisoners - and I believe 65% of them were incarcerated for smoking mari j wana.

Hence why I state freedom, most of these offenders if in third world prisons, would be dead, executed, raped, tortured or all of the above. We are not perfect, but when people fleeing war torn ethnic cleansing countries with the clothes on their backs, guess where they flee to? "Bingo is his Nameo"! So when I state North America as the land of the Free, I never stated Land of the Perfect!
Lastly, there is a reason why North America has 65% of the prisoners, if that is true, most likely is that in the Land of the Free, we allow them to be prisoners, instead of cadavers like in all third world countries.
If I had my druthers, I would borrow a little bit of this, and a little bit of that from third world countries when it comes to dealing with criminals, who rape and murder, but then I am bit one person amongst many who voted to keep them alive, so the majority have spoken and I abide by that law, versus a Dictator who speaks for everyone and executes the innocent and the guilty without losing a goosestep.

Maireid, you are so right. America is the Land of the Free... for felons.
And here are some stats from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS):
Percent of Sentenced State inmates
1995 2004
TOTAL 100% 100%
VIOLENT 47 52
PROPERTY 23 21
DRUG 22 20
PUBLIC-ORDER 9 7
"Oh, but wait, this is for State inmates only! You're lying with statistics!" This might be something you would say after looking at these stats. Well, according to BJS there were 1,274,600 "sentenced prisoners" in state jails. OK, and here are the federal stats for 2006:
This works out to 53.2% of those in federal jails due to drug offenses. And I didn't look but I would have to guess that the vast majority of those drug offenders were dealers or were using something other than pot. Just a guess. And that's 53% of a much smaller number than the total in jail. So when you add this number to the total number of people in state jails it will go much lower than 53% (which works at to roughly 25% according to my calculations).
As for the total number of prisoners in the world, I think you are roughly right, although we have aproximately 4.56% of the world's population. But so what? Would you rather we stoned women for getting raped (Saudi Arabia)? Underdeveloped countries must have a ton of crime that goes unreported and, even when it is reported, where would the criminals go? There probably aren't many bunks in jails, cops to catch the crooks, or judges to have trials.
Anyway, Susan Sarandon can leave this country and I don't think anyone will give a cr@p.

Maireid Sullivan grumped,
I'm not sure, but either way we'd rather just use our cellphones to text in our vote.
Not sure about anyone else, but I'm going to sleep pretty damn well tonight knowing that I live in the United States of America.
I like this story. It's good stuff.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. we have heard all this before, when Bush won several hollywood typed said they would leave.... they are still here. How about we get a signed legal document and movers to help them out?

Good one EastVan,. and Politisite, a one way ticket to Burma,Iraq, North Korea or Afghanistan for Whiny Lefty Celebs should be doable, as I am sure many Americans will kick in the cost of a ticket. Perhaps even help them pack their bags.

Why don't we just cut out the Third World Hell hole de jeur and send these whiny liberals to the Space Station?
