Sylvia Miles is to play Alexandra Del Lago in Tennesse Williams’ play Sweet Bird of Youth. Miles, now in her 70s, was supposed to play the role in 1986 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, but was not able to as the play was canceled over a dispute regarding rights to the show, according to the Boston Globe. Miles is scheduled to return in September to do Sweet Bird again.

The character of Alexandra Del Lago is an aging actress who is brought to a small southern town to recover from a drinking spree.

Miles met Williams himself more than 50 years ago while performing off Broadway, and the two remained close friends, working together frequently, until he died in 1983. Although the playwright told her she would be ideal for the part, tomorrow night is the first time she will perform the show.
