VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Tonight the sky above the Downtown Eastside will be lit with a familiar symbol for the first time in over a decade with the relighting of the famous neon "W" atop the Woodwards building.

Wow!  As soon as the new W went up all the problems in the DTES vanished.  lol!  It's a commercial sign (and not even a restored original).  It is as fake as the new "Woodwards Food Floor" that is nothing but a Nesters Market.  What's that saying about putting lipstick on a pig?  Well the DTES is the pig and the W is cheap lipstick.  I can wait to hear all the complaints from the new tennants about being hassled, robbed and confronted by junkies and addicts right outside the door of their new condos.  Nothing is going to change unless the drug issue is dealt with.  New people moving in are nothing more than fresh marks for all the crimes and scams the addicts run down there.  I know.  I lived a block and a half from Pigeon Park for 5 years.

the W should stand for once WAS. All that is happening at the building is Richie Rich and his clan are moving in choking the life from thr downtown eastside.

What "life"?  There is nothing there left to choke that the drug dealers didn't choke off years ago.  That's no life!  I am all for bringing livability back to the DTES but putting a big W up just doesn't cut it.  Get rid of the poverty industry and the leeches that live off the poor, mentally-ill and addicted and the DTES might stand a chance.  Not that the Portland Hotel Society, PIVOT, Insite, the APC and all the rest of those douchebags will ever have that goal in mind.
