'Talk and Die Syndrome' Likely Cause of Natasha Richardson Death

The shocking circumstances surrounding the sudden death of actress Natasha Richardson, 45, are raising questions about how an apparently minor blow to the head could be fatal.

One theory being suggested is that Natasha Richardson's sudden and rapid deterioration after what appeared to be a minor fall can be attributed to a medical condition known as "Talk and Die Syndrome."

Read about the life and achievements of Natasha Richardson in this obituary tribute.

‘Talk and die patients’ describes a small number of patients who present with a mild head injury (Glasgow Coma Scale [GCS] 13–15) and then subsequently deteriorate and die from intracranial causes.
Talk & Die Syndrome: Traumatology. A clinical presentation in acceleration-deceleration brain injury, which may cause massive cerebral edema, that may have a latency period–eg, 48-72 hrs, until death. Cf Subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Early reports on the state of Richardson's health ranged from her being treated for swelling to the brain, to her being brain dead and on life support.  On March 18, 2009 the severity of her injuries was confirmed when it was announced that she had been taken off of life support.  She died shortly after.

Richardson died surrounded by family and loved ones at Lennox Hill hospital in New York state.  Shock remains over how what seemed to be a minor fall could lead to something so serious and fatal.

Medical science does have a name for what may have happened to Natasha Richardson.  Known as "Talk and Die Syndrome" (or mistakenly as Walk and Die Syndrome) the condition occurs when a blow to the head results in slow internal bleeding.  As the blood begins to pool symptoms like headache, dizziness, forgetfulness and extreme fatigue take hold.

People suffering from "Talk and Die Syndrome" may appear fine at first, talking and acting normal, only to slowly slip into unconsciousness, coma and even death as blood pools in the brain.

Natasha Richardson was reported to be "fine at first" after she hit her head in a skiing accident, but the 45-year-old actress' health began to deteriorate within an hour.

Now sources close to the Tony award-winning actress say she is brain dead and being flown back to New York, where she will be taken off life support.

“I can only speculate, but it sounds like something we call the ‘talk and die’ syndrome,” said Dr. Steven Flanagan, director of Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University’s Langone Medical Center.

“What this implies is that someone hits their head and they are seemingly OK initially," he told FOXNews.com. "But then they get a rapid collection of blood — usually called epidural hemorrhage — and that means bleeding between the skull and the brain.”

The New York Post filed a story on March 17, 2009 claiming Richardson had died after a skiing accident at Mont Tremblant resort near Montreal, Quebec.  The story was later amended to say that she was brain dead.

Richardson was moved from Sacre Coeur Hospital in Montreal to Lennox Hill in New York state and no further news of her condition was released until her death was announced.  Richardson is said to have been moved to the New York location to allow loved ones to say their goodbyes in person before a formal announcement was released.

Natasha Richardson Accident

Unconfirmed rumors had suggested that she had died, although these were quickly withdrawn. Reports, said to be confirmed have Richardson being flown to New York so friends and family to say goodbye when they switch off life support.

More details have been revealed about the accident. Richardson wasn’t incapacitated by the accident immediately, and was feeling fine for nearly an hour after falling during a private skiing lesson. Richardson was said to be on a beginners run, and was not wearing a ski helmet. She was also with her two sons at the time.

Around an hour later she collapsed, and only then was it discovered that she’d suffered major head trauma.

While most sites are saying Richardson is brain dead, TMZ is denying the reports, saying she was being transferred to a New York City hospital to be treated for swelling of the brain.

an interesting post and something people should be aware of. Why don't people wear protective headgear when skiing in the same way as riding a bike.

A sad moment for her whole family......

Sad indeed, which is why it is always important to go to the hospital immediately with any head injury, no matter how well the person feels atm.

No one has ompletely described this fall- she may  have really hit her head but it looked minor because of the snow.  If someone hit their head in the dirt they would be more apt to call for help -snow gives a fluffy beign appearance -but it is what is underneath it that counts. Like rocks, the ground, hard snow..etc.
