United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Tango as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It said the dance "embodies and encourages diversity and cultural dialogue."

Tango was originated in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay). They jointly submitted the proposal to the UN for it to be considered.

UNESCO said heritages seeking approval, transmit from "generation to generation" and give "communities and groups a feeling of identity".

In the official statement by UNESCO on Tango:

It is practised in the traditional dance halls of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, spreading the spirit of its community across the globe even as it adapts to new environments and changing times.

Here is the list of other UNESCO Intangible Heritage.
