Tenor Domingo hugs baby panda in Chengdu
Spanish tenor Placido Domingo cuddled a 1-year-old panda cub yesterday when he visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a non-profit organization engaged in widelife research, captive breeding, conservation education, and educational tourism and located on the outskirt of Chengdu.
Domingo said it was the first time for him to see real pandas. When holding the baby panda, it reminds him of holding his grandson.
In afternoon, Chinese soprano Song Zuying arrived in Chengdu. Later Domingo and Song did their first rehearsal in Sichuan Gym.
Tonight, Placido Domingo, known for his versatile and strong voice, possessing a ringing and dramatic tone throughout its range, will join Song Zuying to hold a concert in Chengdu. The concert, which is expected to be a perfect show combing Chinese and Western cultures, will be featured world-class performance based on Domingo's request.
As a matter of fact, this show was previously not in his schedule for this year. However, when he knew the significance of this concert in Sichuan Province after the devastating earthquake last May, Domingo was finally moved. Instead of the 10 days' vacation in September, the tour will lead him to Chengdu, his final decision.
Tonight, Domingo and Song Zuying will join hands with 100 kids from the earthquake-affected areas in Sichuan to sing Auld Lang Syne, one of most recognized songs worldwide, to lead to the climax of the concert.
