Terminator: Skynet Becomes Self-Aware on April 19, 2011

Remember when "April 19, 2011" sounded like the not-too-distant future? Well, it's today. According to James Cameron's Terminator series, April 19, 2011 is when Skynet becomes self-aware and declares war on humankind. Cue post-apocalyptic wasteland, homicidal cyborgs, Christian Bale rants, and a surprisingly lifelike Sam Worthington.

Note that in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Skynet was set to become self-aware at 2:14am ET on August 29, 1997. The Sarah Connor Chronicles pushed that date forward a bit, so that the race to prevent an automated holocaust would be pressing business indeed.

Of course, machines have pretty much taken over our lives, just not in a synchronized, coherent way. I defy you to make it through the day without either using or relying upon a computer. If you own a pair of Gargoyles, you can wear them at night tonight, and it will be appropriate and unironic.

In fact, just run with it: here's a Terminator soundboard. Phone a friend, hold the mic up to your machine, and let them know that you're looking for Sarah Connor.

Try to work the following Terminator quotes into a conversation this evening:

  • Your clothes. give them to me. Now.
  • Give me the address there.
  • Cyborgs don't feel pain. I do.
  • Nice night for a walk.
  • I need your clothes, boots and your motorcycle.
  • My mission is to protect you.
  • I know now why you cry. But it's something I can never do.
  • Hasta la vista, baby.

Well, even if Skynet takes over today, we have until April 21 before it attacks us, so there's plenty of time to play Portal 2.
