The Thailand World Durian Festival is underway in Chanthaburi, in eastern Thailand. For the uninitiated, the durian fruit is a husky, skiky fruit with an unbelievably strong odor. It's the only fruit that's explicitly banned on the Singapore public transit system. The fruit itself has a complex flavor, and is made into chips, shakes, and other tasty treats.
Originally native to INdonesia and Malaysia, the durian (known as "the king of fruits") is widely enjoyed throughout Southeast Asia. The smell? Love it or hate it, you'll never forget it.
It includes contests of fruits, fruit decorations, and food preparation from fruits, a durian-eating competition, a demonstration of making durian jam, a bazaar of local products under the One Tambon, One Product program, and cultural shows. Visitors will have a chance to buy fruits, seafood, and other agricultural products of high quality directly from farmers.
I don't know what a "contest of fruits" is, but I do know that durian shakes are fantastic.
At the World Durian Festival, rambutans, mangosteens, longgongs, and zallacca are also welcome.

The fruit is rather expensive here in Japan nowadays. I am not to fund of the smell, however I do like the taste.

I do not actually mind the smell too much :) Only tried it once.
