A tip from relatives led to the arrest of a Covington man who allegedly looted and burglarized homes in the Old Landing area of the city, police said.
Covington Police began looking for David Turner, 20, 70381 L St., on Thursday after relatives brought officers items they believed he had stolen, police spokesman Capt. Jack West said. Turner had been staying with the relatives while on parole after serving time for burglary and theft charges, he said.
Officers Andy Northcutt and William Brewster connected two of the items, a briefcase and a laptop case, to a looting that occurred during Hurricane Gustav and a burglary that occurred shortly afterward, West said.
Knowing Turner was a frequent customer at The Green Room, a downtown Covington bar, the officers asked the bartender to call when he came in, West said. He was arrested in the bar Thursday about 7 p.m. while carrying the laptop taken in the burglary, he said.
When questioned by police, Turner admitted to the break-ins, West said.
Turner was booked with looting and simple burglary.
Officers recovered other items that have not been connected to a specific burglary, and West asked that any other residents of the Old Landing area who think they may have been victims of burglaries or vehicle break-ins contact Northcutt at 892-8500.
