NP Rank:
Top 10 Movies of 2008 Announced by American Film Institute
The American Film Institute has released its annual list of the 10 best movies of the year.
Some of the films to make the AFI's cut for 2008 included: Christopher Nolan's take on the Batman franchise "The Dark Knight", Gus van Sant's biopic "Milk", Darren Aronofsky's feature "The Wrestler", and Pixar's animated film "Wall-E" (see below for the complete list).
Unlike the Golden Globe nominations, which were announced earlier this week, or other critics' year-end 'best of' lists, the AFI does not name a best film of the year.
However, the Institute will honour all of the filmmakers included on its list at a special ceremony to be held in early January 2009.
The Batman epic "The Dark Knight," the political biopic "Milk" and the gritty drama "The Wrestler" were among critical favorites that landed on the American Film Institute's list of the year's 10 best movies. Also on AFI's list, released Sunday, were the animated "Wall-E," Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino," the superhero blockbuster "Iron Man," the indie dramas "Frozen River" and "Wendy and Lucy," the adapted play "Frost/Nixon," and the Brad Pitt epic "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
Unlike other film honors, the institute does not rank films or pick one as the year's best. The filmmakers behind the top 10 choices will be honored at a luncheon Jan. 9.
Many of the films on the list picked up Golden Globe nominations last week and are expected to compete for Academy Awards. Oscar nominations are to be announced Jan. 22.
Here is the AFI's complete list of top films of 2008:
The American Film Institute has packed their Top 10 films of the year. Like any AFI list, the films are all over the map from indies to big Hollywood blockbusters, and I find myself a little bit angry after reading through the selections (although, not as much as I usually am). Why was Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire snubbed? I thought it was considered to be partly an American production? I am also surprised that they included two comic book films in the results (not that I disagree).

Some of those movies, I would not have voted into the top 10 if I had a say in the matter.

I trust the AFI more than the Oscars. But I agree with Paschen -- it's a matter of taste. I think that people with day jobs are sharper film critics than some of those who write reviews for a living. Making work out of recreation changes a person's point of view.
At any rate, thanks for this list. I'll take it with me to the video store.

I have only seen the Dark Knight from the list which I thought was done well and with Morgan Freeman in that, it got my attention, Christian Bale is a terrific actor who gets no recognition, alot of great actors should get awards but do not, seems like its an in-crowd thing.
