NP Rank:
Top 10 Twitterers: They Probably Don't Follow You
The Daily Telegraph has published its list of top ten international Twitterers. They arrived at their results by... uh... not sure, really. There's a donkey in there, so judge for yourself, gentle reader, the merits of the list.
- Stephen Fry (An awful lot of tweets, though, I mean, come on)
- Ashton Kutcher (Played out. Yawn)
- Salam Pax (Okay, this guy's legit)
- Queen Rania al Abdullah (Supposedly it's really her)
- Shahid Kapoor (Access Bollywood)
- Monsieur Dream (Just too cool for me)
- Mano Menezes (Futbol fever)
- Pepper (It's a donkey! Seriously! It's basically spam! Telegraph, are you high?!
- Problogger (Tweets about tweeting, but with healthy snark)
- TheREALBoyzone (WTF)
So why is this important? A better question is, what's the true value of Twitter fame? What's the currency? The currency is retweets. Come on, you like seeing a message pop into your stream with "RT @[you]". The stuff that gets retweeted isn't the run-of-the-mill having-a-great-sandwich tweet, but an amazing photo, or a cute-as-hell kitten, or a clever article.
The more retweets, the more people think it's interesting and worth the bandwidth of their Twitter-adjusted attention spans.
"Retweeting tends to segment the market and reach those individuals who are most likely to be responsive to the information," Christakis said.
With that in mind, I daresay that some names are missing from that list:

Nope. I've tried 100 times to see the point of twitter and what it could do for me. I just don't get it. And I've heard of two of those people above.

Yeah, that's a pretty weird list. I get a lot of use out of Twitter becasue I have worked hard to attract and retain relevant followers who are interested in science and science news. Similarly I follow those who post items relevant to me. (I follow only one celebrity @rustyrockets but I count him among my writer folks.) I don't tweet personal stuff, only items I think are interesting to the audience I have cultivated. I block most people who seem like spammers and I do drop people if they are not contributing to the thought-stream. I generously RT when I find a true gem. I can understand why some folks don't get Twitter. I think they assume that you have to have it on all the time and that stuff is constantly pouring into your Twitter feed. But you can restrict it and search for key terms that are relevant to you. I don't know, Twitter may morph into something else altogether in a year. Right now it's almost like a news wire for me from which I gain inspiration and also through which I hope I inspire others. Oh, and my name should definitely be on that list! ;)

Twitter has been a life changer for me. As a diet & lifestyle coach I have the ability to share my passion and knowledge about nutrition and health like never before. It's because of Twitter & other social networking sites that I now have clients in 10 countries and all over the United States. It's easy to share a simple message, have it passed on and make an impact with Twitter. The more you tweet about your passion, the more people see you as the "go to" person in your field.

I love Stephen Fry. And Queen Rania's doing great things. It's actually fun to follow her on Twitter. Mashable's always got great stuff, too.
I'm with you. Ashton Kutcher = Yawn.
My faves are me (of course) and TheAuthorGuy (Author Christopher Moore).

I absolutely love Twitter. It has helped me meet people in a new location and it has helped the business I work in. Personally I hate to see celebs not following people back and then claim to be interacting with their fans. Twitter isnt all about the Celeb status. Some of my favorite Tweeps have less than 1000 followers :-)
