The Trouble with Summer 2009
Harry Potter fans were shocked tonight when Warner Bros decided to move the latest installment from upcoming November to July 2009. The reason for this is that the writer's strike affected things to the point where summer 2009 is lacking big movies. Or atleast big movies that people want to see. So, by moving the movie to July the studio has a chance to make extra money since it doesn't have any strong competition.
However, was this the best solution for a lacking summer `09? Before I move on let me show you the summer schedule, so you have an idea of what I'm writing about. Here's a link to the schedule.
Notice that May looks very good, if not great. Yet the rest of the summer doesn't. Why? It's because studios are obsessed with May. Now, how many times over the past few years have you heard (or read) someone complain about how packed the month is? Well, I think this is a chance for studios to give the month some space.
For example, Disney could move Hannah Montana: The Movie from May 1 to June 5. Also, Universal can move Bruno from May 15 to August 14. Or what about Warner Bros moving Terminator: Salvation from May 22 to June 12. Also, Universal can move Drag Me to Hell from May 29 to August 21 which currently has no movie opening.
Just a simple suggestion to Hollywood.

I'm not convinced that it's about summer positioning, since Harry Potter fans will see a Harry Potter movie no matter what else is playing.
This seems more like the studio hedging for reshoots or more looping, for which they'll need writers. Studios, with their budgets (he says with a tinge of envy) also have the luxury of time, and, for such a big franchise, they will want to make sure to get this film right, so as not to induce franchise fatigue.
Post-production is where the movie really gets made; moreover, studios can afford to re-shoot, whereas indies generally can't (resecuring locations, getting your cast and crew back, etc is a real drag), and the Potter production team would be crazy not to take advantage of that: the movie will be big- that's as much of a guarantee as one could hope for in Hollywood, but they can make it even bigger.

Thanks for the story. I just heard about this on the radio today and was very disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing the new movie in November and couldn't believe they pushed it back 8 months. I agree with Jordan that Harry Potter fans will go see the Harry Potter movies no matter what month they are playing. I certainly can't imagine someone who hasn't seen any of the movies anxiously awaiting the release of the 6th movie.

It's possible that they needed reshoots (like the new Star Trek which was supposed to open this December), but if that were the case why did they wait this long to move the release? That's why I assume it's more of a business decision. While it is a good business decision, seeing how lacking summer `09 is, I don't think that was the solution. Un-cramming May and releasing some of those movies within the remaining three months would have fixed things to some degree. Although that would be a solution for Hollywood in general. As for Warner Bros, if they needed something in July they could have moved Terminator from it's May release to July. Which also would have been a smart business decision.

Lacock Abbey in England. The cloisters and courtyard were used for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies.

I can't believe the studio had the nerve to push this movie off by 8 months! It's a disgrace and completely unfair to the fans. I'm heart-broken.

Yeah, it is unfair to the fans. Also, like I said earlier, if WB needed a movie in July they should have just moved Terminator from it's crowded May release date.
at 14:18 on August 15th, 2008
If they need to reshoot or change any scenes to improve the movie, they could move it maybe a week to a month perhaps and it would be still ok. But 8 months?! That's too much!
Not everything is about money WB!

Really, this has never been about the fans. I organise launches etc for both the HP books and movies in Australia, so a very strong fan, but mainly of the books.
WB knows that they could postpone any of the movies by a year and the same fans complaining now will still pay to see it several times. But, by moving the release to a Summer spot all the non-fans or casual fans will pay. These are the one who otherwise could have decided it was too cold to head out etc and not go.
The movies aren't kids movies anymore, just like most kids under 15yo would miss so much of the book story in the last 4 books. WB needs to reach a new secondary market to reach the older audience (versus small kids) and the move was needed to do that.

Oh my goodness! I didn't hear about this until you requested to use my photo. :( I think it's a tad bit ridiculous, and as somebody's already said, Harry Potter fans will go see the movie no matter when it comes out. They're already separating Deathly Hallows into two parts, and now they've given us another eight months to wait?
By the time they get to actually finishing out the septet, the actors are going to be fourty years old and I'm going to be going with my grandchildren. :P
at 17:15 on August 15th, 2008
The movie being moved to July 2009 isn't going to affect the Deathly Hallows 2-part movie. Those are still expected to be released in 2010 and 2011. In other words, we're getting three straight years of Harry Potter.

Summer 2009 is lacking of big movies...? What the hell reason is it? Why should the audiences suffer from both "postponed HP" & "no more big movies in 2009"??
at 19:42 on August 15th, 2008
The writer's strike is the reason for a lacking Summer 2009. Although, as stated in my article, the summer can be fixed if they spread the May releases into the rest of the summer.

This was during the Malaysian premiere of Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix. My friends and I went in our HP uniforms and had a blast!

This photo turned out far creepier than I intended. I did a series of photos in which I placed myself in a movie scene, and this was my Harry Potter scene. I was totally bummed when I found out they were delaying the movie. I felt like I'd already had to wait forever for it to come out. I really want to go see Equus in New York!
