Twilight star Kristen Stewart has landed her latest role in James Woods' "An American Girl." The film will depict the story of a high school swimming champion who enters a downwards spiral of drug and alcohol abuse. The main plot will be about how she turns her life around by joining the Marines.

The film is already getting plenty of buzz, particularly regarding Woods' confidence that this role will be the Oscar-caliber kind of opportunity for 19-year-old Stewart.

James told Coming Soon.net: "It's a phenomenal story, and a slam-dunk Oscar for Kristen."

The actor personally bought the script from writers Tim Metcalfe and Sean McCarthy, and told Kristen he wouldn't make it with anyone but her, and since reading it, she is just as keen to start filming.

James said he has been working out deals with Kristen and the writers.

Outside of The Twilight Saga, Stewart's body of work has been less mainstream despite her typecast identity as love struck Bella in the teen vampire franchise. With performances in "Speak" (2004), "Into The Wild" (2007), and "Adventureland" (2009), Stewart has made her preference for off-beat roles clear. "An American Girl" will undoubtedly be another opportunity for Stewart to showcase her talent beyond the realm of the Twilight craze.

Stewart is currently filming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse in Vancouver, BC until October 31st. New Moon, the second film in the trilogy, opens in theatres on November 20th.
