Tyler Perry's History of Child Abuse and Molestation
Tyler Perry has spoken up about his own history of child abuse and molestation in an e-mail to fans while he promotes his new film about an abused teenager.
In the e-mail, Tyler Perry, now a successful comedian, actor and director, speaks of his father beating him relentlessly and a neighbor molesting him when was only 10.
He even talks about his grandmother not wanting him to get his weekly allergy shot:
"Ain't nothing wrong with that damn boy - he just got germs on him. Stop wasting all that money," she said, he recalled.
"She came and got me out of the living room leaving my Matchbox cars on the floor. She said she was going to kill these germs on me once and for all. She gave me a bath in ammonia."
Perry eventually left his home and after spending some time on the street he became a writer, actor, director and producer. He is now the producer of many successful TV shows, and is the executive producer of Precious, with Oprah Winfrey, which tells the story of an obese teen mom trying to deal with sexual and mental abuse.
Perry has spoken out about his abuse before, but in his e-mail he reveals more than what he previously has said.
In the e-mail also posted on his web site, he says he can't keep this information in any more.
He was beaten by his father with a vaccum cleaner extension cord and was hit until the skin was coming off his back.
Without elaborating on what seems to be another molestation incident, he mentioned "a man that I knew from church when I was a kid" who had died broke and whose family asked Perry to pay for the funeral.
"I quickly said no, but I wish I would have said yes. There is something so powerful to me in burying the man that molested me," Perry wrote.
"I would have dug the grave myself."
He says God comforted him in his darkest times. He is hoping his message helps others.
