NP Rank:
Ukrainian toddler not to be adopted by Elton John
Taking a tour at a Ukrainian orphanage last Saturday, Elton John had decided to adopt a toddler and said "I'd love to adopt him." After meeting Lev, the toddler that stole John's heart, Elton went from not wanting a child to loving a child.
The singer told reporters that his partner, David Furnish, "always wanted to adopt a child and I always said no, because I am 62 and because of the traveling I do."
What had inspired Elton to adopt was the death of his good friend, keyboardist Guy Babylon. Elton had said "he was such a genius and so young and has two wonderful children, what better opportunity to replace someone I lost than to replace him with someone I can give a future to."
But Elton had been rejected to adopt Lev by the country's Family, Youth and Sport Minister Yuriy Pavlenko because of Elton's age, he's 62 years old and Ukrainian law requires a parent to be more that 45 years older than an adopted child.
Pavlenko told The Associated Press that adoptive parents must be married and Ukraine does not recognize homosexual unions as marriage.
