The UK's acclaimed Tate art galleries have taken a bold step into the digital realm by making a collection of more than 400 audio, video, films, commentaries and performance art pieces available for free download through iTunes.

The films and audio commentaries feature the likes of David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Martin Creed, and Louise Bourgeois.

In a wise move, the galleries also plan to make "multimedia guides for the latest Tate exhibitions" available through iTunes U — Apple's mobile and web-based educational site.

Other museums and galleries should take note — this is a great way to engage and educate new audiences.

More than 400 files are now on iTunes U - a section of the online store which features educational content.

Projects include a series of films that use social networking site Twitter to bring the audience's questions directly to artists like David Hockney.

There are also recent interviews with contemporary artists including Jeff Koons and Louise Bourgeois.
