Urban art and globalisation
There was a time when Sofia was a fairly neat city, albeit maintained in decent shape by a totalitarian municipal authority, in order to show the capital as the 'face' of a (supposedly) superior social order. In the smaller backstreets there were, of course, the usual expletives - hand-scratched standalone words or (more rarely and not lasting long) in political statements. But there was nothing like the graffiti as we know the genre today.
In a recent re-visit I doscovered a different city: an art gallery!. Works of urban underground art are everywhere, many are tasteful and some are even meaningful. (Perhaps all are meaningful - to those who know 'the code' :)
I only wonder how Sofia is different now from Bangkok, Chicago or Madrid?...
These are some glimpses from my neighbourhood walks -
