There was a time when Sofia was a fairly neat city, albeit maintained in decent shape by a totalitarian municipal authority, in order to show the capital as the 'face' of a (supposedly) superior social order. In the smaller backstreets there were, of course, the usual expletives - hand-scratched standalone words or (more rarely and not lasting long) in political statements. But there was nothing like the graffiti as we know the genre today.



In a recent re-visit I doscovered a different city: an art gallery!. Works of urban underground art are everywhere, many are tasteful and some are even meaningful. (Perhaps all are meaningful - to those who know 'the code' :)



I only wonder how Sofia is different now from Bangkok, Chicago or Madrid?...

I believe that the people who do urban art are very artistic.  I don't think that they express it the best way always but at least they try.  Some of their work is very creative.  Too bad they can't use it for something lasting and enduring.

The transience of their art is, IMHO, an essential characteristic of the genre: the 'archeological layers' come a lot faster than they used to. In months or even weeks (ratherthan centuries, as the frescoes in ancient buildings) they are updated, enhanced or totally replaced. Dynamic and short-attention-span as modern life has become...
