For 2011 average movie ticket prices in America increased less than 1%. The ticket price increase was far less than 2010 where it increased 39%.
The overall increase is likely less than inflation so surprising for the industry. However the ticket price includes markups such as 3D and IMAX. So the decline is also due to 3D movies being far less popular in 2011 than 2010.
The average movie ticket prices since 2001 are:
2011 $7.93
2010 $7.89
2009 $7.50
2008 $7.18
2007 $6.88
2006 $6.55
2005 $6.41
2004 $6.21
2003 $6.03
2002 $5.80
2001 $5.65

I didn't know people still went to movie theaters to see movies.
Maybe they enjoy sitting in seats other people wipe boogers under before they sat there, and that creepy feeling of having your feet stick to the floor, and you HOPE it's just soda and not some bio-fluid??
Maybe it's that great selection of tasty refreshments at low prices?
Maybe it's the social aspect of seeing a movie and listening to others talk to each other over it? Sharing an armrest with an obese person? Sitting next to someone with a nasty cold?
Maybe it's the fun of returning to your car and finding it ransacked by punks who knew they had easy pickings of a lot full of cars for two hours?
Maybe it's so you can catch new releases as they come out so you can brag to all your friends you saw 1 out of the 100,000+ movies on DVD or on demand before they did?
I don't know. I haven't been in a movie theater since Batman. 1989. ( I think it was a double with Patrick Swayze's Roadhouse?) Maybe I'm missing something.
